Signs Of Deer In Your Area |
There are many different types of deer sigh to let you know that deer have been in the area that you are hunting. Some of the signs are Scrapes, a broken branches over a scrape, Rubs, Deer droppings, Flatten down grass, Buck tracks, Doe tracks, ect. But you have to know what to look for when you go out.
Bedding Areas:
A bedding area is a place deer will go to to rest or sleep during the day.
The area might be open with broom straw grass or opening in the wood or it could
be in the thickest part of brier or vines. This area where deer feel safe
and should not be messed with. You can jump a deer out of the bed when you get
to close to them, I have been only 6' away when this has happened to me. I
have also walked right past them to only jump and run off on my way back through
the same area.
Deer Scrapes:
Deer scrapes come in many different sizes and places. Most of the scrapes that you will find will be next to a food source or on a trail going to a food source. This way as the doe or female deer are traveling to eat or going back to the bedding area they will smell them to let them know that a Buck or male deer is in the area, it is like a calling card.
I have heard it said that the bigger the scrape is the bigger the buck is also, I tend to agree with it myself.
Buck Rubs:
Buck rubs or antler rubs are found all over the woods why? This a way of letting other bucks know that this is my area kind of like hunters are (territory or hunting spot go find your own). Rubs can tell lots of different things about the bucks that are in your area also. What ever you do not touch your findings to leave your sent there. Buck or does don't like it.
1. How big the buck is!
The reason I say this, A 1 to 1-1/2 year old small buck body is not this tall and so he will rub closer to the ground oppose to a a buck of 2 to 3 year old that can reach higher and cover more area on small tree. So the taller the rub the bigger and older the buck is.
2. How wide his rack or spread is!
Most small bucks will find a tree the they can push on to remove the dead velvet from their horns. Bigger bucks need something a little bigger to push and twist on. If they get a small bush it will break or snap, so this is way bigger buck find thicker growing trees or bushes to rub.
3. How long his points are!
I have seen a cluster of cedar tree that was 4 to 5" thick on a fence row in V and Y shape when the deer was rubbing the horns where hitting the back cedar tree and cutting into the bark. we shot the deer 1 year later and his tines were 10" long with a 19" spread. the 10" tines reached to the next tree behind the one he was rubbing.
4. Which way the deer is traveling to the rub!
Most deer have a route that they travel,
5. When he was there last!
If you have pine tree that has pine sap on it and that has no has a chance to harden then or still looks clear then probability are the rub is fresh maybe hours to 1 day old or if the bark on the tree is still flexible and not dried out.
Deer make lots of different types to sounds to communicate with each other some of the sound are:
Rattling of horns
Blow a hunter worst fear
All of which help other deer in the area to know what is going on.
